Hostel Review – Naughty Squirrel Hostel, Riga

A September 2018 review of Naughty Squirrel hostel Riga from an impartial traveller. Hold onto your hats, this place is one heck of a special sleep – Naughty Squirrel hostel Riga is the full package.

Naughty Squirrel hostel in Riga is perhaps the best-located hostel in the city, sitting just within the tourist-magnet old town and a stonesthrow from the bus station. Everything you’ll need is in close proximity including a shopping complex with toiletries stores, a supermarket and chemist. It’s also a five-minute walk from the bus station, meaning you can cut out the stress of hunting for buses or taxis for the next leg of your trip. The airport bus also stops nearby also, takes around 30 minutes and costs around two euros.

Safety and Noise

The hostel is spread over several floors with the reception on the first and a card pass system in place, changing to buzz-in only entry after midnight. Inside, each bedroom door is accessible only by card pass and every guest is assigned a lockable cage under their bed. As the hostel is in old town, the surrounding streets are well-lit and usually busy, so walking alone at night never felt like a hazard.

Toilets and Showers

Despite there being only two showers and toilets on the floor I stayed on, I never had to queue. Compared to most hostels, the shower rooms have plenty of space and shelves, avoiding the backpacker’s dance of keeping everything in tiny spaces and off the floor.

Atmosphere and Social

Naughty Squirrel’s social atmosphere and events are the hostel’s main selling point and the owners ramp up the welcome by highlighting them at check-in. The hostel has a bar, kitchen and multiple chill-out corners, so if you’re looking for company, Naughty Squirrel will deliver.

If you end up on one of the pub crawls, spending time at the bar, waiting in the common area or generally just breathing, you may get a shot of the famous Riga black balsam. Don’t say we didn’t warn you….

Sightseeing and Excursions

Events and excursions are advertised on a chalkboard in reception and are renewed every morning. These range from Netflix and popcorn in the cozy, sofa-lined common room to pub crawls and shooting range excursions. There is an area by the front door offering flyers and posters advertising walking tours and bike rental options.

The price includes towels and lockable under-bed cages, although not padlocks, so rent one or bring your own. Naughty Squirrel has the usual left-property shelf in its fridge and also sells beer, soft drinks and other items on the premises, removing the need for a midnight wander to top up beer supplies.
